Australia Day's Hanging Rock

The Hanging Rock is a unique formation of rocks described as “mamelon” (French word for nipple). It is an extinct volcano with steep sides, which is situated near Mt. Macedon in Victoria. I went there during the Australia Day Horse Racing meeting, and it was quite different from my normal Melbourne Cup hangabout. There were no ladies with flare flowery dresses, well... there were some, but there were more country folks wearing shorts and tank tops with a token Australian Flag as the ladies’ cape.

It was a good feeling to be out bush and enjoyed the fresh air of the mountain. Situated about 1 hour from Melbourne, I was able to enjoy the green trees of the mysterious “Miranda’s last resting place” (see Peter Weir’s film “Picnic at the Hanging Rock”).

This was my second visit at the place, and I do believe that the place has a mystery quality in it. Despite my partner’s saying that the whole “Picnic at the Hanging Rock” was fictious. It is just like a spooked feeling I have whenever I visited abandoned prisons, just like the time I visited Fremantle Prison in Perth a few years ago.

Spooked or not spooked, I think you should visit the Hanging Rock for the fresh air, the green bushes, and the walking tracks. Just be prepared to bring water and take a lot of rest before you reach the top of the rock.

Lewat Vatikan, terus berhenti di gereja besar.
Buesar, bok, gerejanya. Ada “fresco”, ada patung santo-santo, dll.
Dekat gereja ada pancuran air, kalau haus, aku ga bisa minum dari situ
(well, tergantung sih – seberapa desperado akunya).

Laura Ingalls Wilder. An American. Little House series.

My favorite novels when I was a kid. Who is this Laura Ingalls Wilder (February 7, 1867 – February 10, 1957)? Here I quote an excerpt from http://frodo.marshall.edu/~irby1/laura/frames.html

Laura's daughter, Rose, became a famous writer in the early 1900s. Rose recalled the stories her mother had told her during her growing-up years, and thought that other children would be as interested in those pioneer stories as she was. She encouraged her mother to write down the stories, and Laura did. The first manuscript of what would eventually become the "Little House" books was called Pioneer Girl, and told of Laura's entire childhood, until she married Almanzo Wilder. This manuscript was rejected by editors, and has never been published.

I had to admit, though, that the part when Laura first met Almanzo encaptured my heart the most. I read and re-read These Happy Golden Years .

Another interesting side of Laura's life is that she was a teacher, who in between teaching at rural schools attended school herself in De Smet.

Note to self: will read the novels again. Haha.

Indonesia is going to raise its flag on 17 August, the Independence Day. As with other heroic days, Indonesia always raises its flag. Every household should have a flag pole, strange it might be to foreigners, but it is our pride to raise our flag on a heroic day. After hundred years of colonialization by the Dutch and Japanese (and some other countries), 17 Agustus is always an important moment to raise our flag although the actual Independence Day can be argued. (I heard in Australia you have to pay tax to raise Australian flag, anyone who can confirm this?)

We even commemorate the raising of the flag by holding a flag ceremony. Every Monday elementary and junior high schools hold flag ceremony, although it is troublesome for some students cause on sunny days they have to stand on an open ground. For me, though, it was always fun. A nerd? Maybe. I had to be the choir conductor, or "pemimpin upacara"/ceremony leader, or protocol/MC, or "ketua barisan"/class leader, or adjutant who carried UUD ’45, Pancasila, and other documents for the "Inspektur"/inspector. There was another duty that I never tried; "pengibar bendera"/flag raiser, which consists a team of three.

This year I will serve in a mass as a choir member. I’ll sing a short solo part in one of the songs. That will add the smiles on my memory of “lomba makan krupuk” for every Independence Day celebration back home.

Suatu pagi yang indah di sebuah sekolah dasar,seorang Guru yang begitu
berdedikasi sedang mengajar anak2 muridnya tentang betapa bahayanya minuman
keras kepada mereka.

Sebelum memulai mata pelajarannya pada hari itu dia telah mengambil 2 ekor
cacing yang hidup, sebagai sampel kehidupan dan dua gelas minuman yang masing2
berisi dengan air mineral dan Whiskey yang mengandung kadar alkohol tinggi..

"Coba perhatikan murid2.. lihat bagaimana saya akan memasukkan cacing ini
kedalam gelas, perhatikan betul2. Cacing yang sebelah kanan saya, akan saya
masukkan ke dalam air mineral manakala cacing yang sebelah kiri saya akan
masukkan ke dalam Whiskey. Perhatikan betul2."

Semua mata tertumpu pada kedua ekor cacing itu. Seperti diperkirakan, cacing
yang berada dalam gelas yang berisi air mineral itu berenang2 di dasar gelas,
manakala cacing yang berada di dalam whiskey menggeliat2x lalu mati.

Pak Guru tersenyum lebar, apabila melihat anak2 muridnya memberikan perhatian
sepenuh hati pada pelajaran praktek yang dia berikan
"Baiklah murid2, apa yang kamu dapat pelajari dari praktek yang Pak Guru
tunjukkan tadi??"

Dengan penuh keyakinan anak2 muridnya menjawab:

"UNTUK MENGHINDARI CACINGAN...MINUMLAH WHISKEY"

A Letter for West Brunswick Youth Group

Hi ppl!

Greetings from Perth! I'm here to share the happenings in Western Australia. I hope it's ok.

I attended church in Carnarvon, St. Mary of the Sea for about 6 months. You know how hard it is trying to go to church when my partner is a new Catholic. He said, "the sermon is boring". So what I did? I didn't attend mass when he "begged" me to. "I want to try the oysters in 2 Mile Beach!" - which is free anyway, and fresh. So to his taste I abandoned my mass, calling in mind that church is our body, our fellow human beings, and the building itself. It's not easy I can tell you, the priest thought I have converted to atheism, coz I didn't attend the mass. Nonetheless, I felt welcome in God's home everytime I prayed at the church.

Country church is diff from City church. D'oh what am I talking about? The country folks felt threatened when somebody new came into the church and became a regular. A foreign face (you wouldn't see many Asians at the church) is totally unbelievable. They thought I was a backpacker. Funny that, just on the day when I decided to ride my bike with a backpack full of stuff. When I walked to the church, they never asked. But so be it.

I loved this church without singers; they used CD instead as an accompaniment to the congregation. Only on school masses (they have primary school and high school up to year 10) they had a vocal group like ours. My Ash Wednesday mass with year 1 and 2 kids is unforgettable.

Now I belong to Applecross parish in metropolitan WA. My partner said, "the priest is normal, his sermon made sense". Thank God for that. He never missed a mass now, and I'm really glad. In this parish they also have Indonesian mass every Sunday - they belong to Western Australia Indonesian Catholic Community (WAICC) - but I only attended the Indo mass once. You know why, my partner doesn't understand Indo. And so for his portion, I would go to mass twice if I miss my Indonesian language.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: The Film Review

You’d be surprised that the latest installment of Harry Potter septology (I didn’t even know that this term existed) can be seen as a mockery to the education system. Can it be that JK Rowling is more than an author?

Through the order of the phoenix we can see that the education system is so fragile that the Ministry of Magic can infiltrate Hogwarts by putting Dolores Umbridge (secretary to the Ministry) as one of the teachers - and yes it’s the scapegoat position - as Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Later on she became the Inquisitor and then even replaced Dumbledore as the headmaster.

Great.

On a lighter note, though, the younger audience can learn that people don’t like different people. Let’s hope they can cope with this fact, and not discriminate anyone just because they are of different look or opinion.

It’s a pity that Cho Chang’s character was not strong at all, and the kiss between her and Harry was the only interesting development in Harry’s personal life. Yet, Luna Lovegood’s character was great. I love this “looney” girl.

Another pity. Sirius’s death was not dramatic at all. I still remember when I read the novel a couple years ago, I was quite shocked.

Oh well. I’m still a big fan of Harry Potter!

Transformers: A Review

Why did they make a “human” film of Transformers? Because the generation that watched animated Tranformers are all grown up now. At least that’s my partner’s argument =).

First things first. Criticism.
Storyline, nothing special.
Dialogues are so cliché.
Cheap women. Shit. I hate that! Why did they have to portray skanky-hoes as the (s)heroes? Maggie Madsen (Megan Fox) was not as bad as Mikaela Banes (Rachael Taylor) though. Magie at least was only shot as ‘center of attention’ twice in the Pentagon meeting, while Mikaela had to show off her bod while doing the car engine. On a more positive note, Bumblebee is cute as, I like him. I also like how the metal creatures transform into big things. Especially the cd player.

Conclusion: go watch it! It’s worth the experience. Don’t have to think, just hold your breath once in a while during the film. Visuals await!

"Katering"

Karena pembantu pada mudik dan belum kembali kerja abis Lebaran, ibu-ibu rumah tangga pada bingung cari makanan karena suami dan anak ngomel-ngomel karena makanan kurang bervariasi.

Bik Inem, pengelola katering kelimpungan karena banyak orderan hari itu. Ibu-ibu pada ngerumunin dia, bilangnya, Bik, mbok ya makanannya ganti-ganti to tiap hari. Masak tiap hari kok tahu, tempe, sayur, sayur lodeh, sayur apalah, sayur inilah. Bik Inem pusing, lha gimana, bahan-bahan sembako melonjak naik karena harga BBM naik. Mau beli daging, mahal. Beli ayam, takut flu burung (lha Bik Inem takut dengar-dengar kabar burung orang-orang ga mau makan ayam). Ibu-ibu penggede bilang sama Bik Inem, lho ya, jangan takut to Bik. Mahal sedikit ga apa. Yang penting kan konsumen ga lari. Ibu-ibu menengah bilang, wah jangan mahal-mahal lho Bik, nanti kami ganti katering. Kami suka kok rantangan yang biasa. Wah wah wah, Bik Inem pussssiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnng.

Akhirnya Bik Inem tanya katering sebelah, Cik Gwat, itu katering gimana ya? Kok permintaan penggemar banyak sih? Cik Gwat ngguyu, wah Bik Inem, ojok bingung-bingung. Sing penting Bik Inem ada duit buat beli bahan, trus ya disesuaikan sama permintaan penggemar. Tapi ojok enak-enak lho masake Bik. Ntik aku gak ono penggemar. Haha, Bik Inem ngguyu, ga jadi pusing. Untung mereka sudah lama bertetangga, jadi sudah kenal baik. Bik Inem katering halal, Cik Gwat katering non halal.

Akhirnya Bik Inem ya beli ayam, soalnya kata dokter sebelah, ayamnya baik-baik aja kok. flu burung cuma isuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Karena isu, ayam harganya murah, jadi katering ga tambah mahal. Ibu-ibu penggede senang, ibu-ibu menengah senang. Bik Inem mesam mesem.

Carnarvon

This is the first day of the rest of my life…

…in Carnarvon, WA.

Maybe it was my first time flying in a Fokker 50. The flight from Perth to Carnarvon was alright, except for the fact that the plane wobbled towards the landing. My eyes were watery - not a very nice feeling.

Carnarvon is very nice; it’s like Bali without the tourists and restaurants. My friend told me that I’ll get into my writing mood when I’m in such a quiet place, which is quite true!

I’ll just have to find friends, cause seriously, I think I’ll get tired to only see my dear friends’ face on my laptop screen. I miss all of them! My Channel 31 friends would shoot again tonight… go Ashley!

Oh well, so much for my writing mood today, I’ll go back chatting with my virtual friends ha-ha!

Aku tidak mau menyesali perbuatan sendiri. Sekali kubuat, tetap kubuat. Buatlah aku seperti batu karang, yang tidak goyah diterpa ombak, walau terkikis sedikit demi sedikit. Buatlah aku tuli untuk cemoohan-cemoohan gila dan perkataan yang berulang-ulang. Aku tidak ingin mendengar hal yang sama setiap hari.

Chinese Movies: My Favorite Films

I find it quite hard to distinguish the style of Chinese movies
geographically, i.e. HK, Taiwan, and mainland China. Instead, I would
like to review some renowned films in relation to the directors and
their works.

1. "2046"
Dir: Wong Kar Wai.
A film about love and its many languages. Starring Tony Leung, Faye
Wong, Takuya Kimura, Gong Li, & Zhang Zi Yi. Very powerful casts. This
film is said to be the semi sequel of "In the Mood for Love" (Fa Yeung
Nin Wa) and "Days of Being Wild" (A Fei Zheng Xhuan). It is even
assumed as the summary of all films he has done. You might also want
to check out another film of WKW "Happy Together" (Cheun Gwong Tsa Sit).

2. "Farewell My Concubine"
Dir: Chen Kaige.
A very beautiful film on the issues of homosexuality and political
movements in China in relation to Beijing Opera.

3. "Hero"
Dir: Zhang Yimou.
Playing with colors is Yimou's specialty. Instead of powerful scenes
in martial arts, you will see beautiful colors and coreography in this
film. Some people find the plot annoying, while I find it brilliant!
Don't forget to see "Raise the Red Lantern" (Da Hong Deng Long Gao Gao
Gua) as well. Gong Li acted very well in that movie. "House of Flying
Daggers" (Shi Mian Mai Fu) is worth watching as well.

4. "Little Cheung"
Dir: Fruit Chan.
I met Fruit in person in Melbourne, and he's really funny. Being an
independent filmmaker, he is very relaxed. His films are the scenes you
really get in the street of HK. He said "Little Cheung" can be
categorized as a docudrama. Very interesting indeed.

Some really good Chinese movies include Tony Leung & Leslie Cheung in
their cast; indeed they are very good actors.
As for new Chinese filmmakers, The Melbourne International Film Festival introduced me with Jia Zhangke, a new director from mainland China. His films are really
exhaustive because the issues are really deep.

17 Agustus. Another one. Second one am here, out of my beloved country. Katanya kita merdeka tanggal segitu. Bener yah? Kayanya di sini anak-anak Indo di kampus biasa-biasa aja sih. Ga ada yang ngerayain, bikin karnaval, dan semacamnya. Instead, we work on our thesis/final project/creative project. And even blogging for Convergences unit. Hmmm... that sounds interesting. Well, bukannya kita ga cinta ama Indonesia, tapi semuanya jadi tanpa makna kalo kita ga berada di lingkungan RT sendiri. Ga ada anak-anak yang lomba makan kerupuk, lomba sendok dan kelereng; ibu-ibu yang repot bikin penganan dan nasi campur untuk bazaar; atau bapak-bapak yang mendirikan panggung pentas seni. Kangen juga sih. Yet I celebrate my own independence day. Minggu kemarin aku masak makanan Indo. Soto madura (daging sih, soalnya ada temen yang ga seberapa suka jeroan), gado-gado (cuma tahu goreng en kubis doang, lupa kalo punya telur, hihihi, maap ye), en nahhh ini nih: pisang goreng. Nyoba-nyoba pake resep dari internet.

Somersault: A Review
"I don't wanna be alone"

Somersault underlines a girl's desire of not wanting to be alone. The main character, Heidi, may appear to be flirtatious toward guys; yet what she wants is really to have a company. I guess her characteristics are derived from her mother, Nicole. Thus this is one interesting point of view to look at: about the parallelism of stories between the mother and the daughter. From the short appearance of Nicole, I believe she has her own story of not wanting to be alone. Else, where would Heidi come from? In terms of storyline, I see the simple third act form; beginning, middle, end. Heidi has a journey, and after all the troubles, she manages to resolve with her problems. Heidi's diary might help the audience to know Heidi's back-story. I like how clever the dialogue between Heidi and her 'boyfriend' is constructed. In terms of technicalities, the use of landscape and natural elements helps the audience to engage with the story. The snow, the "tears" caused by using hot water to crack the snow on the car's windscreen, the red color... (I am not going to spoil the film here =) ). The mood of the film is very blue from the very beginning; we even see a blue laundry basket! When the resolution is made, though, the light brightens... very nice indeed. "It's good that we met", Somersault.

2046: A Review

I haven't seen "In the Mood for Love" or "Days of Being Wild", which is referred to be the prequels of 2046. Thus I began my journey of watching this film without having any assumption of what's going on. I find the plot quite simple. It may be a tandem narrative or sequential narrative, but the red string is clear. The film brings us to see how love comes and goes away. It's all in your hands, as Chow said it, "When you don't take 'no' for an answer, there is still a chance you'll get what you want". I can connect to Bai Ling, when she hopes to be together with Chow again. But a chance is a chance, there's no guarantee you'll get what you want. As with the audience, the Asian audience/audience which has Asian background would probably can relate to this film better. The crying scenes are 'silent' and not full of limbs movement. One westerner in the same cinema with me did say that this film was dead boring and dreadful. In terms of technicalities, the soundtrack is marvelous! Shigeru really did a good job. I like the graphics, too. So Wong Kar Wai, well done!

Biarkan Bintang Menari: A Review

This film has a clear storyline, which is quite unusual to the musical genre. "Cats", "Phantom of the Opera", and other Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals can be considered metaphorical, as they use literary works as their framework. "Biarkan Bintang Menari" (BBM)'s storyline touches the very core of human relationships, especially that of Indonesian people. Despite the fact the film was based on a "supposedly" fairytale, it's actually a fantasy of the 'child' in Indonesian adults. The dance sequences are not perfect, yet the songs represent how Indonesians express themselves. I reckon the choreographer should explore Indonesian way of dancing, by not dismaying the fact that Indonesia's dance development tends to be more westernized. The dance sequences seem awkward in some ways and not synchronized with the songs and/or music. Yet, I still love this movie and regard it as a new wave of Indonesian film genre which I hope to improve in the future.
